Optimising childhood coverage rate assessment and reporting methodologies

          2023

Vaccine Preventable Diseases and Vaccination Coverage in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People, Australia, 2016–2019

          2023

This report, which focuses on the 2016–2019 period, is the fifth comprehensive NCIRS report on vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs) and vaccination coverage in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. As with previous reports, it aims to analyse and assess routinely collected data on notifications, hospital admissions, deaths and vaccination coverage, to support service delivery, policy development and further research on the prevention of VPDs in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It identifies a range of achievements, including positive impacts of immunisation programs on the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and further ways to move forward.

Impact of COVID-19 on School-based Vaccination Programs

          2023

This NCIRS evaluation has found that overall, pandemic impacts on vaccination uptake in adolescents were relatively limited in Australia compared to other countries; however, the number of adolescent vaccinations given in 2020 and 2021 was lower than in 2019.

Key findings - Annual Immunisation Coverage Report 2021

          2022

This summary report presents key findings from the Annual Immunisation Coverage Report 2021 which focused on changes in immunisation coverage among all children aged <5 years, adolescents and adults between 2020 and 2021. The summary report also shows vaccination coverage among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and the impact of remoteness and socioeconomic status on vaccination coverage rates. This is the first report in the series to comprehensively document the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated public health response measures on vaccination coverage.

          Annual Immunisation Coverage Report 2021

          2022

The Annual Immunisation Coverage Report 2021, released by the National Centre of Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS), examines Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) data for children, adolescents and adults and is the first to comprehensively document the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated public health response measures on vaccination coverage. Vaccination coverage in children in Australia remained relatively high overall in 2021, despite the major disruptions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, however pandemic impacts on coverage were greater in some areas, particularly remote areas with a high proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, the report has found.

Paediatric SARS-CoV-2 serosurvey 2022, Australia: Summary report

          2022

The Paediatric Active Enhanced Disease Surveillance (PAEDS) Network and the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS) conducted a study to estimate the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in children and adolescents aged 0–19 years until August 2022. The study findings suggest there have been high rates of infection in children and adolescents of all ages across Australia, including those whose parents had not suspected infection and in vaccinated children. However, hospitalisation rates are lower, indicating children, especially those who are vaccinated, rarely experience severe disease.

Summary of National Surveillance Data on Vaccine Preventable Diseases in Australia, 2016-2018

          2022

This summary report on vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs) in Australia brings together the three most important national sources of routinely collected data on VPDs – notifications, hospitalisations and deaths – for all age groups for the three-year period 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2018. This report, prepared by NCIRS, has been published as a supplement in the Communicable Diseases Intelligence journal. NCIRS has published six of these reports since 2000. These reports serve as a national resource to support surveillance and control of VPDs in Australia, particularly VPDs targeted by the National Immunisation Program.
