The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Immunisation Leadership Committee was established in 2025 and provides cultural and technical expertise, advice and advocacy to inform current and future immunisation research, policy, programs and evaluation relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

The Committee comprises passionate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander professionals supported by non-Indigenous allies, representing diverse backgrounds and professional affiliations.

Members hail from every Australian state and territory, as well as from urban, rural and remote areas.

The Committee helps ensure that NCIRS’ work is community-led, community-driven and embodies Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of knowing, doing and learning.

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Immunisation Leadership Committee values

We recognise that health is a holistic concept – encompassing physical, emotional, social, cultural and spiritual dimensions – as understood and lived by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The 7 values outlined below were developed by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Leadership Committee to guide its own work as well as NCIRS research, partnerships, and policy development that impacts Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We build relationships based on mutual trust and benefit. We value 2-way learning and shared responsibility in all our collaborations.

    Self-determination

We support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in leading decisions that affect their communities. We work in partnership to ensure immunisation strategies are community-led and strengths-based.

    Data sovereignty

We uphold the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to control the collection, access and use of their data. We commit to ethical data practices that respect community governance and benefit.

    Collaboration and independence

We foster inclusive partnerships across sectors while maintaining the independence necessary for rigorous, unbiased research and policy advice.
