The picture for adult coverage in 2023 was mixed; while coverage increased for pneumococcal vaccine and remained stable for zoster vaccine, it was consistently suboptimal across both vaccines. Ongoing monitoring of adult vaccination coverage and investigation of the reasons underpinning the suboptimal coverage are needed.

Zoster vaccination

Zoster vaccine coverage in adults turning 71 years of age was slightly lower in 2023 than in 2022. Overall coverage was highest for adults turning 75 years of age (58.3%). Coverage patterns for Indigenous adults were similar.

See Figures 20–23 in the full Annual Immunisation Coverage Report 2023 (pp. 47–49) for more details.

Pneumococcal vaccination

Pneumococcal vaccine coverage for adults turning 71 years of age was higher in 2023 than in 2022. Overall coverage was highest for adults turning 72 years of age (41.7%). Coverage patterns for Indigenous adults were similar.
