How to report the 'Vaccine type' field to the AIR

Legislative changes introduced on 1 March 2024 require all vaccination providers to complete the 'Vaccine type' field when reporting vaccines administered to the AIR.

There are four options available under the ‘Vaccine type’ field – as follows:

Vaccine typeExample
AntenatalVaccine is administered to an individual who is pregnant. This vaccine type should be used for pregnant individuals regardless of National Immunisation Program (NIP) funding
National Immunisation Program (NIP)/CommonwealthVaccine is funded under the NIP or by the Australian Government – i.e. NIP and COVID-19 vaccines only.
PrivateVaccine is purchased privately – i.e. travel and influenza vaccines (that are not funded under the NIP).
State ProgramVaccine is funded under a state or territory program.

The quickest and easiest way to report vaccination information to the AIR is through clinical software or the Health Professional Online Services (HPOS) system on the AIR site.

Using software

Ensure the latest software has been updated to support reporting this information – for example:

  • Medical Director: Use version 4.3*
  • Best Practice: Bp Premier, Orchid SP1 Revision 1.*

* Current at June 2024

Contact your software provider for further information and support.

Using the AIR site

  • Log on and identify the individual.
  • Select ‘Record encounter’ or, if the record has previously been submitted without the ‘Vaccine type’ field being completed, ‘Update encounter’.
  • Complete all fields and select ‘Add’.

Note that:

  • if the AIR site is being used to edit an encounter, you must be acting on behalf of the immunisation provider or organisation that originally reported the vaccination
  • encounters cannot be edited if an information payment has already been made.

More information about editing a vaccination encounter that has already submitted to the AIR is available here
