This report reviews methodologies currently used in Australia and overseas to assess adolescent and adult vaccination coverage (excluding COVID-19) and recommends evidence-based approaches to optimise coverage assessment and reporting from a clinical, immunisation program and public health perspective.

This research report presents the findings of a thorough review of childhood vaccination coverage assessment and reporting methodologies used in Australia, with comparison to approaches taken overseas, and makes evidence-based recommendations to optimise these methodologies from a clinical and public health perspective.

This report, which focuses on the 2016–2019 period, is the fifth comprehensive NCIRS report on vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs) and vaccination coverage in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. As with previous reports, it aims to analyse and assess routinely collected data on notifications, hospital admissions, deaths and vaccination coverage, to support service delivery, policy development and further research on the prevention of VPDs in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
